Blog Post 2: Supreme Court

After watching the part one video about the supreme court I was surprised with how little I actually knew about the highest court in the federal judiciary of the United States. The supreme court plays a crucial role in our society because it makes sure that we the people have our words heard. Unlike the president who is one person making a decision, the supreme court is made up of nine individuals with different opinions and ideas that are all taken into consideration before a decision is finalized. I always thought of the supreme court to handle issues only involving the president or the government. After watching I've learned they also hear and rule on criminal cases. The most interesting part about this for me is the process taken to have your case reach the supreme court. It takes up to six weeks to get an answer on whether they will take your case. It’s a difficult process for the very reason they only choose a limited amount of cases such that you must present a compelling case. The best argument you can make is that what has happened to you has been unconstitutional. In the past, I haven't been interested in history or current affairs, but after learning more about the amendments and supreme court in class, I am now curious to know more about our country and its inner working.
